Pinulog (Ganua Obovatifolia)

The Philippines is not only rich in mineral resources. We are also abundant with native trees.

Pinulog, also known as Ganua Obovatifolia, is one of the native trees of the Philippines. It is a Mindanao tree species that is endemic or unique to Lanao Del Norte and Matumtum, South Cotabato. It is one of the rarest, and right now, one of the most threatened, critically endangered native tree specie.

Every tree is important. However, a lot of people are not aware of the benefits of native trees. Native trees are trees that grow naturally in their own habitats and are not transplanted from other areas. According to the Rain Forest Restoration Initiative, native trees of a country safeguard local residents' means of subsistence while preserving the watershed and freshwater resources. They also help in the recovery and expansion of forest habitats for endangered native plant and animal species. Unlike foreign and exotic trees, they may be chosen for their ability to grow more quickly and germinate more easily, yet they are not good for the ecosystem. They frequently modify the soil nearby, making it difficult for other plants to grow and prosper. They don't protect wildlife, particularly endangered species that prefer to live and breed on local trees. So, when our native trees are significantly cut down, the rain will be able to penetrate through the land and destroy it. Consequently, animals will not be the only ones to lose food and shelter, we, humans, may lose our homes too. Native trees are a natural source of carbon, and they help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, losing native trees may also cause us world and health problems.

A tree is an important part of the environment. We should protect them from being cut down. One example is when building a house. Native trees are often forgotten when it comes to landscaping and gardening. But they are more than just pretty leaves and branches. They can be great for your home and garden. So, instead of cutting them down, we may think about it thrice. We can also participate in various tree planting programs, especially native tree planting. We might also consider creating a similar group to the Rain Forest Restoration Initiative, an organization that helps to restore native forests. It is a campaign that aims to increase the number of trees in South America. The Rain Forest Restoration Initiative is focused on protecting the Amazon. Let us protect our native trees as they protect us.
